ASTOR PIAZZOLLA

LAS CUATRO ESTACIONES PORTEÑAS

Quinteto para violín, bandoneón, guitarra eléctrica, piano y contrabajo

Revised edition

Revised by Fernando Gabriele Mangifesta

This work, which is part of my bachelor’s degree thesis in Traditional Music - Bandoneon at the Conservatory of Music ‘A. Casella’ in L'Aquila, stems from the desire to research and study the aspects of the interpretation and composition of Astor Piazzolla’s œuvre. In particular, when examining ‘Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas’, the original scores were compared with the live performances of Piazzolla and his Quintetto Tango Nuevo from the early 1980s, analysing the differences and bringing back to the new scores all the material that was actually played. An exception was made for Primavera Porteña of which only two recordings exist, which are both by the first quintet. Through careful listening and studying, which lasted for months, new scores were written that contain all the material found in the recordings of the performances examined in an attempt to be as faithful to them as possible, even if, like all music of every era, with the utmost scrupulousness, it is not possible to translate on paper certain aspects of this art, which can only be expressed through its practice. Therefore, this work intends to increase the study of Astor Piazzolla’s œuvre while also contributing to its divulgation. My special thanks go to Gianni Iorio for the work we did together and for the extraordinary supervision of my thesis. I would also like to thank Dario Flammini for their continuous comparisons and support as well as Gianluigi Cristiano and Roberto Della Vecchia for their advice. Without them, this work would not have been possible.
